What Does the Pineal Gland Do?
The pineal gland acts as the body’s light meter. It reacts to light information and sends out hormonal messages. Circadian rhythm is a process that sends signals about the length of daylight to the body. The pineal gland tells the body whether it’s light or dark out, what season you’re in, and whether days are getting longer or shorter. After puberty, the size of the pineal gland decreases and the production of serotonin increases. Light exposure stimulates the pineal gland to produce melatonin.
